3rd Place
America
This is a selection that I know before writing is going to cause a lot of debate especially from people who have not travelled to the USA before! America is one of the most stereotyped countries in the world and that doesn't change when it comes to food with most people probably thinking about burgers, chips and hot dogs as they read this! The reality I am happy to report is totally different with some of the world's best food coming from the states these days. Yes you will find burger joints and junk food easily but you will also find these in the other countries on the list. America is like a huge melting pot of cultures and what that produces is some of the most unique and diverse culinary treats that you are ever likly to find.

Forget the burgers! When i think of America I think of the great diversity of New York and it's 1000s of restaurants, or the clean and vibrant cooking happening in Los Angles, or the rich and souful food of the south, or quality Tex Mex at it's best, or the trendy food in Miami etc etc. See America is like 10 countries rolled into one with lots of different flavours mingling together to create a huge variety and choice of dishes. If you add to that mix some of the world's best produced ingredients along with some very highly trained chefs you have the perfect mix for a country to make it in at number 3 on this list! I just know a lot of people are going to disagree with this and have a preconcieved idea of American food all being served in Hooters but I also know that the people who are thinking that are the people probably have never been to the country to sample it's delights!

Hmm... I don't think I agree with this being number 3. I know there's huge diversity but I find outside of New York/San Fran/LA, it seems to be chains of restaurants doing the same things. You really have to seek out good food. There's way too much fast food going on too and yes, I have been to the States and lived there for a while but I'd put, France, Italy AND the UK above the States. I haven't travelled East yet but my brother has and he wouldn't hesitate to put China and Vietnam above the States.

Heya Sarah, I knew it wouldn't take long for the first disagreements! I agree that it can be hard to find great food but the same can be said about the UK and east! There are certain areas in UK that would mistake a Michelin star for a nice car. I am sticking by my guns! Other great cities with great restaurants in the states that I have visited but didnt mention are...New Orleans, Boston, San Diego, etc etc!

Bravo for giving the diverse food culture in America the respect it deserves.
Although the country is riddled with fast food chains and places like Outback Steakhouse and Applebees, (shudder) there are unique, amazing culinary traditions that exist, such as the food of the South.
I'm from the Pacific Northwest, was a chef in San Francisco and lived for several years in New Orleans. I now live in the south of France and have to admit that the food in New Orleans, in general, beats anything you can find around these parts!
I adore French food, Italian food, Indian food, Mexican food, Thai food, etc, and fortunately you can find all of this is abundance in America.

I think you have summed it up very well indeed there LouLou and I agree with New Orelans being a culinary hotspot! I was there a couple of years ago for the jazz festival and i must say I had a ball, one of favourite places in the world, as is south of France by the way!

I agree you can find very good food in the U.S being from Canada I spend a lot of vacation time down in the states. Is it a legitimate to say that because the U.S is a melting pot of other cultures that their food is great? Doesn't it mean that those cultures all make nice food and have brought it over to the states? If this was actually legitimate I would have to rank a multi cultural country like Canada at the top of this list but I don't think thats fair.
